A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's key government projects.
The disaster took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link built to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate the cause of this incident,” affirmed the head of state.
The official confirmed that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The leader stated plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the immediate past president, whose presidency concluded the prior year. This venture was a hallmark of his leadership's economic vision for the southern region.
Another ambitious railway undertaking from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The development of both railway systems was overseen by the army, marking a notable growth of its responsibilities in civilian projects. They were executed at an rapid pace, defying forecasts to be at least partly launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also fueled significant questions over operational security.
- Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This involves an earlier accident this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Calls for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a key rival party demanded an urgent suspension in the development and management of all similar projects.
This halt was requested while awaiting a thorough technical review. The party stated that the loss of life "calls for immediate answers."
In reply, the president insisted that the train had been running in total accordance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the construction and running of these national initiatives.
